Tips for choosing the right home for your loved one.

Location:

It can be challenging to get an aging parent or relative for a variety of reasons. One of their main fears is that they will not be able to see the people they care about anymore. It is a good idea for look for a facility close to where they already live so they can feel confident friends and family will be able to visit.

When you are visiting a potential care-home and you are being shown around, the following are what you should pay close attention to:

Amenities:

Older people can be vulnerable to infections, injuries and illnesses. Amenities should be safe and clean and in a good state of repair - this is a strong indicater of the quality of the service that will likely be provided.

Staff - attitude and qualifications.

Observe how the staff interact with existing residents and deal with their requirements. Do they act with care and compassion? Your family member’s wellbeing will be with them 24 hours a day - you should be convinced that they are receiving specialised and personalised care.

Existing residents:

Are they clean and dressed properly? Taking into consideration their illness, do they seem happy and content? Check that they are well supervised and not walking around appearing lost.
